JEFFESON CITY, MO – Auditor Tom Schweich announced today his support for Amendment 1 and Amendment 5 which will appear on the August 5th ballot.  Amendment 1, also known as the Right to Farm, would amend the Missouri Constitution to “ensure that the right of Missouri citizens to engage in agricultural production and ranching practices shall not be infringed.”  Amendment 5, a pro-second amendment resolution, would declare in the Missouri Constitution that “the right to keep and bear arms is an unalienable right and that state government is obligated to uphold that right.”

“I support Right to Farm and Amendment 5 wholeheartedly.  These two amendments are important to Missouri citizens and their passage is needed to stop out-of-state special interests from meddling in our state’s business.

Recently we have seen anti-agriculture groups and an overreaching federal government try to regulate Missouri’s agriculture industry into obscurity.

Whether it is attempting to bar children from working on the family farm or requiring dairy farmers to have an oil spill containment plan, Missouri’s farmers and ranchers are constantly being targeted,” Schweich said.

Regarding Amendment 5 Schweich said “With out-of-state anti-gun interests groups opposing this amendment, it is important for Missourians to know that the assault on our Second Amendment right is ongoing.  We must stand up and stop this attack on our Second Amendment rights.”

“While there may be some costs as people on one side or another sue, it is a small price to pay for the protections of the Second Amendment.

As I continue to crisscross the state I am going to urge every voter to stand with me and support these amendments.

I will continue to be diligent in the fight to keep our right to defend ourselves, our families, and our farming heritage and push back against out-of-state interests who intrude in our way of life,” Schweich said.
