The Associated Press is reporting that Jay Nixon used official resources to intimidate and threaten supporters of one of his Republican opponents.
According to the AP, Nixon’s communications director called a national fraternity office to complain about a banner hanging at a local Mizzou chapter. During the phone conversation, it was also suggested that the banner could threaten their tax exempt status.
This is not the first time that Nixon has gotten in trouble for misusing official staff or resources. In 2009, two Republican legislators signed affidavits alleging that a Nixon staff member attempted to bribe them with jobs in exchange for their votes on a bill. And throughout his tenure as governor, Nixon has come under sustained fire for excessive travel on the state plane—including taking a taxpayer-funded trip to a college basketball game.
“Jay Nixon has been caught red-handed using official resources to intimidate and threaten supporters of one of his political opponents,” said Lloyd Smith, Executive Director of the Missouri Republican Party. “Given the fact that more than 220,000 Missourians still cannot find work, you would think that Gov Nixon has better things to do with his time than harassing college fraternities over political signs.”
